Michelle Best

Inspired by Dutch ceramics from living in the Netherlands, Michelle makes stoneware functional ware and vases in a minimalist style using three different types of stoneware clay. Making her own glazes and using a selected palette gives a unique contemporary feel to her pottery.

Michelle has attended Potfest in the Pens (Penrith), Potfest Suffolk and was part of the Shop for the Senses Collective at the Rheged Centre, Cumbria. Michelle was part of The Makers Mill Studios and Gallery in Keswick from 2020 till 2023 as their resident potter. From early 2024, Michelle’s new studio is in the heart of Keswick and houses a community hub for teaching local students on the potter’s wheel.

Studio Holder

Julia Forrester

I am a studio potter creating small batches of contemporary ceramics in porcelain inspired by life in the beautiful Lake District. Nature, landscapes and families including their dogs often feature in my work.

Sculptured pieces evolve into usable candle holders, vases and plant pots featuring local mountains. There is also options to have your dogs paw print or your children’s hand print included in a bespoke design.

Intrigued by the translucency and nature of porcelain I enjoy slab building and throwing, altering and layering to create different light effects through the clay.

I enjoy experimenting with stains and oxides by pouring and layering glazes to create movement and depth.

My work is bisque fired to 1000°C then fired to 1280°C in an electric kiln.

I graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2004 in 3D Design specialising in Ceramics.

I have lived and worked in Keswick since 2015 teaching pottery and selling my work locally and online.

In my dream to become a full time potter I have recently joined Michelle Best Ceramics Studio in Standish Street, where I have my own studio space and teach pottery in the centre of Keswick.
